How to Build the World’s Simplest Electric Train

The AmazingScience channel on YouTube has recently released a video of what they call the “World’s Simplest Electric Train” that is made up of just a battery, some magnets and a copper wire coil. It uses some basic principle of electromagnetism and is perfect for some fun at home or a science demo in class. Check it out below:

How does it work? The magnets on each side of the battery conduct electricity and make contact with the coil. The electricity then passing through the coil creates a magnetic field that’s oriented along the middle axis of the coil. Now, the magnets and the magnetic field have opposite polarities so the magnetic field always repel the magnets, and so the battery and magnets move.
