The former communist ruler of China, Mao Zedong is gaining some precedence in the form of giant gold-plated statue located in an open field off the country side of Henan. A legacy that lives on through the statue that is estimated at $459,000, a project funded by private entrepreneurs.

The structure towers at about 121 feet high and was fabricated out of concrete, steel and plated in gold (naturally). The statue was completed in December after about 9 months of labor and construction. It is also stirring up some controversy as some of Mao Zedong policies brought forth disaster and death on the providence of Henan, making it a pretty insensitive location for the memorial. The former ruler’s “Great Leap Forward” economic reform, specifically, was held responsible for a great famine in the 1950’s and 60’s resulting in millions of deaths in Henan.
